OUR HISTORY

15th Anniversary

The Genesis House is a reality thanks to the vision and leadership of Fr. James Snodgrass and the dedication of several area congregations.

In 1990, the dire need for a local homeless shelter became evident when a homeless family came to the door step of

Fr. James’s church, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. At that time, Fr. James had no means of assisting them.  Fr. James convened area congregations to see if this community could establish a safe haven where families could go for help in finding their way on their journey.

In 1993, a committee of believers was formed and a year later, in 1994, a home was purchased.

The overwhelming support for this venture helped bring the Genesis House to life.  Area congregations and community organizations showed their support by participating in the Adopt-a-Room campaign, which allowed them to sponsor a room and take on the task of repairing their room.

In October 1994, the Executive Director, Dan Carr, was hired and the Genesis House was granted 501 © 3 status and given a Federal ID.  The Genesis House’s first family was welcomed in on January 25, 1995.

In 2008 an apartment was donated by a local family seeing the need for single adult males. In 2009 the first year 39 men stayed at the men's shelter, given a chance at a new beginning. 25% were from jail or prison. There men were helped to get safe affordable housing, counseling, addiction assistance, medication and medical help.

Since that time, thanks to the dedication of this community of believers, the Genesis House has served over 600 families. With God’s help we will continue to open our doors and our heart to those in need.
