Stephanie's Story

Stephanie came to the Genesis House with her 12-year-old daughter and her 2-year-old son after her husband had abandoned the family.

While at the Genesis House, the staff encouraged her to enroll in Jamestown Community College to pursue her career interest in human services. Within three years she obtained her Associates degree and a secured employment in the field.

Since then, health problems have forced Stephanie to remain at home; however thanks to the degree she earned at JCC, she is able to operate a small business out of her home which keeps her solvent. She and her children have returned to church and are doing well.
Stephanie is grateful for the continuing support Genesis House provides through food distribution and moral support. They return to the house for "Share and Prayer" joining with other Genesis House graduates.

Amy's Story

If it’s one organization that knows, cares, and understands what it’s like to live and help people with psychiatric disabilities, it is the staff at the Genesis House. In the following paragraphs I would like to express what the Genesis House has done for me and how they helped me to go from having no hope, to being a successful person in society. After reading my story I hope you will see why I feel the Genesis House deserves to receive the Community Support and I’m absolutely sure that there are many others that feel the same.
When I first became homeless I did not know who to go to or what I was going to do. I had attempted to get help from DSS and they referred me to the Genesis House for help. When I arrived at the Genesis House, they welcomed me with open arms. I was lost and confused and it seemed like the staff knew exactly what to say. My husband and I were taken in that day feeling loved and cherished.
While we stayed at the Genesis House, the staff helped us figure out if we had any psychiatric disabilities. If it wasn’t for the help of the Genesis House we wouldn’t have found out what was wrong. The Genesis House staff had given us resources to help with his psychiatric disabilities and if we ever were having personal issues they took the time out to talk with us so we could cope with the issue the correct way.
The Genesis House also teaches families and individuals independent living skills. I was young when I entered the Genesis House and I was also diagnosed with severe depression. I was able to learn and improve my independent living skills. The Genesis House had cooking classes, chores, and many other responsibilities for each individual to improve and make habit of these skills which improved our self worth and self esteem. This has really made living now on my own so much easier and has truly helped me cope with some of my depression.
The Genesis House helped my husband and I find a safe environment to live. When I had called every number on the landlord’s lists I was given from DSS and no one had any apartments, I thought all hope was lost. Then the staff at the Genesis House showed me that the newspaper also had apartments for rent in it and gave me numbers to other landlords that were not on the DSS list. The Genesis House staff taught me how to fill out paper work for help with rent and had given me other referring agencies to help me with the security deposit.
After we had found an apartment, we didn’t have money to buy everything we would need for the apartment. The Genesis House stepped up and helped yet another time to get us what we needed to live in the apartment through the aftercare program. I knew I could count on the Genesis House and still can to this day that if I’m low on food or household items; they are only a phone call away. They have become a huge part of my life since the first day I walked into the house and they always will be.
Now, I am an Administrative Assistant at the Mental Health Association in Catt. County. I have a beautiful apartment and two wonderful children. I have become what I’ve always wanted and it all first became possible through the Genesis House. They have truly helped me become the person I am today. They have been and still are a huge part of my life. Now that you have read my story I hope you can see why I think, and believe with all my heart, that the Genesis House deserves the community support.
